Friendship moves by the council
10Oct07
LEICHHARDT Council is extending the arm of friendship to the Middle East, by supporting a local group hoping to help the occupied Palestinian city of Hebron.
Friends of Hebron is a Leichhardt-based community group established to raise awareness of the situation of Palestinians in Hebron.
Group member Carole Lawson said: ``We were inspired by Leichhardt's Friends of Maliana which has done so much in the community to let people know the situation in East Timor, and to raise funds to support the people of Maliana.
``Council's decision to help firmly establishes the road forward to developing a solid relationship between the communities of Leichhardt and Hebron.''
A series of meetings has recently been held between the group, the Inner West Chavurah and the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies in order to discuss how Leichhardt can help develop Middle Eastern communities.
Friends of Hebron and the Jewish Inner West Chavurah will work together to come up with ideas to go to the four-member Council Project Selection Panel that was established at the council's last meeting on September 25.
Mayor Carolyn Allen has already received an invitation to visit from the Mayor of Hebron.
``It's a generous offer but I won't be visiting Hebron just yet,'' she said.
``We look forward to working with Friends of Hebron though. They will put forward their projects to the council and we will help them where we can.''
